How long should you normally abstain from sex after thyroid surgery

There are many kinds of thyroid diseases, and the duration of abstinence is decided according to the post-operative recovery situation, which should be analyzed on a case-by-case basis and should not be generalized. In the case of simple benign thyroid nodule excision, the scope of surgery is small, the patient recovers well, the stitches can be removed 5-7 days after surgery, and the patient only needs to abstain from sex for about 1 week. If the patient undergoes surgery for a malignant thyroid tumor, the procedure requires removal of lymph nodes, which is more extensive, and the muscle tissue below the skin, etc., takes some time to recover, and the time required is often 1 month. Although the blood supply to the neck is richer and the wound recovers faster, premature intercourse can lead to bleeding in the neck, which can seriously compress the trachea after massive bleeding and thus lead to asphyxia. Therefore, patients should review the neck ultrasound regularly after surgery to observe the wound recovery, and avoid strenuous exercise during intercourse in the early postoperative period to prevent wound dehiscence.
