Most of the patients gradually improve after 6-8 weeks of taking antidepressants, the depressive symptoms gradually disappear and the brain activity basically returns to normal. Depression is a serious mental illness. Patients with depressive episodes show inhibition of brain mental activity, such as manifestation of persistent depressed mood, diminished interest, slow thinking, and slow attention span. Generally, if the patient responds well to the chosen medication, there will be a remission of depressive symptoms in 2-4 weeks, and ideally the depressive symptoms will largely disappear at 6-8 weeks, and then the treatment needs to be continued at the original dose for more than 1 year to prevent and control relapse. It is important to note that if the chosen antidepressant does not cause remission of the patient’s depressive symptoms after 6-8 weeks of gradual dosing to the maximum dose, adjustment of the treatment plan should be considered promptly under the guidance of a physician.
