Why do doctors touch the anus when examining the prostate?

The prostate gland is one of the male reproductive organs and men often receive prostate diseases. Prostatitis is more common in young men, while prostate enlargement and prostate cancer are common in older men. When a doctor suspects prostate disease, he or she needs to confirm the diagnosis by giving the patient a physical examination, blood tests and ultrasound. There is something special about the way the prostate is examined, the doctor usually needs to feel inside the patient’s anus with his fingers to check. The prostate gland is located at the bottom of the torso, above the bladder, below the switch that controls urination, and protected by bones in front. The back of the prostate gland is adjacent to the rectum, about 4cm from the anus, so your fingers can easily reach the back of the prostate gland from the anus to feel the size and texture of the prostate gland, whether there is a lump, etc. You can also squeeze the prostate gland to squeeze out the prostate fluid for laboratory tests. This method of examination cannot reach the front, side or top of the prostate, so the information obtained about the prostate is incomplete and needs to be combined with other tests.
