Treatment of colon polyps is primarily surgical, with treatment options determined by the size, number, complications and pathological nature of the polyp.
Biopsies can be performed endoscopically to clarify the nature of the polyp, while polyps can be removed directly under colonoscopy. Based on the pathological histological findings, a decision is made whether to perform additional radical surgery.
For colorectal adenomas, which are considered to be precancerous, surgical removal of the adenoma can significantly reduce the incidence of cancer. In familial adenomatous polyposis, the cancer rate is 100%. If left untreated, it will almost always eventually become cancerous, so it should be diagnosed and undergo radical surgery within adolescence if possible.
