Qi Li and Health in the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine

The concept of health care in Chinese medicine is rooted in the idea of the unity of heaven and man and the Tao of nature. In Chinese medicine, there is a term called “qi-li”. Qi Li has a great role in the growth and development of the human body. The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine says: “Those who are rooted in the outside are named Qi Li; those who are rooted in the middle are named Shen Ji. When the qi stops, the transformation is extinct, and when the gods go, the machine rests”. There are many versions of this phrase, so I’ll share my understanding of it with you here. What is qi? Qi here refers to the 24 solar terms in a year. The ancient people determined the twenty-four solar terms by observing the astronomical climate for 365 days a year, and how did these twenty-four solar terms come about? In the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, it is said that “five days are a waiting period, three waiting periods are a gas”, that is, three, five, one and fifteen days are a gas, and a year should be twenty-four gas, in the Chinese concept, the section is very important, two gas for a section, so that the year is twelve sections, twelve gas, collectively known as the twenty-four gas. This “qi” governs the changes of climate, spring, summer, autumn and winter, warm, hot and cold. People live in the natural world, and like all animals, they have to adapt to the climate of this natural world, so the so-called root is outside, that is, and the natural world, people in the natural world, a set of ways to contact nature, this is the “Qi Li”. When spring arrives, the weather becomes warmer and everything revives, so people have to respond to nature. People’s activities should be increased at this time to assist the growth of yang energy; they should be happy and have a smooth mood to facilitate the development of yang energy; they should be pleasant to their colleagues and family members to avoid stagnation of qi, which is also necessary for the development of yang energy, and so on. At this time of the year, the weather becomes hotter and the days are longer and the nights are shorter, so we should sleep late and get up early, and be more active outside to facilitate the release of Yang energy. At this time of the year, the weather becomes cooler, Yang kills Yin, Yang begins to recover, crops are ripe, the weather is dry, it is easy to be cold and cold lesions, so we should add clothes in time, reduce the time to go out and maintain the body’s Yang. According to this performance, people should go to bed early and get up late to protect their yang energy to facilitate the growth of next spring. Taking the four seasons as an example to illustrate the role of qi-li, of course, each of the twenty-four solar terms in a year is different, and we will come back to the topic of health care in the four seasons and the twenty-four solar terms later.
