The prevalence of coronary heart disease in China is increasing year by year, and the age of the disease tends to be younger, which seriously endangers the health of human beings. Today, we would like to introduce a common food that can effectively prevent coronary heart disease and angina: garlic, and teach you how to “garlic” a healthy heart. Garlic has been known as “the penicillin that grows in the ground” and has a long history of consumption and cure. In the book “Compendium of Materia Medica” by Li Shizhen, a great pharmacologist of the Ming Dynasty, garlic has the effect of “turning decay into magic”. In addition to its well-known pharmacological effects such as anti-infection, detoxification and anti-cancer, it is also a good food and medicine to prevent and treat cardiovascular diseases. In recent years, domestic and international studies have demonstrated that hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease. Homocysteine is a sulfhydryl amino acid, which is an intermediate product of methionine metabolism. Its active sulfhydryl group can promote the generation of hydrated peroxides and oxygen free radicals, which can damage vascular endothelial cells and lead to a series of pathophysiological reactions, causing atherosclerosis. Modern pharmacological tests have proved that allicin, the active ingredient extracted from garlic, has obvious pharmacological effects such as lowering blood pressure, lowering blood lipids, scavenging oxygen free radicals, antiplatelet aggregation and preventing atherosclerosis. The author’s recent animal experiments and in vitro endothelial cell culture experiments have proved that allicin can effectively reduce the level of serum homocysteine in animals, and can directly and indirectly reduce the damage to vascular endothelial cells caused by high homocysteine. A series of clinical observations in China showed that the application of allicin for the treatment of angina pectoris in coronary heart disease can lead to rapid improvement of angina pectoris symptoms, with the total effective rate reaching 82%-85% and the total effective rate of electrocardiogram reaching 56%-62%. As a way to prevent coronary heart disease in daily life, we can choose to eat garlic directly. So how much garlic can be eaten to prevent coronary heart disease? Some studies have pointed out that eating 1 gram of raw garlic per kilogram of body weight per day can have the above preventive effect. However, garlic should be eaten in a proper way, preferably raw. Most of the active substances and active ingredients of garlic are destroyed after cooking. Some people have compared raw garlic with cooked garlic and found that the effect of raw garlic in preventing coronary heart disease was more obvious than that of eating the equivalent cooked garlic. However, the biggest obstacle to consuming garlic is its foul odor, which can be quickly eliminated by using the following methods: ① Drink some strong tea or milk; ② Chew a little tea or 1 to 2 black dates in your mouth for a few moments; ③ Hold a piece of angelica in your mouth. Although garlic has good therapeutic effects, it is not suitable for everyone. Patients with enteritis should eat raw garlic with caution; patients with glaucoma, cataract, conjunctivitis, wheals, dry eyes, etc. should eat less; those with combined gastric and duodenal ulcers or excessive stomach acid should also eat less.
