Severe snoring not only affects the sleep of oneself and one’s partner, but also is often accompanied by apnea, which may lead to the risk of sudden death. Today’s treatment is to wear a positive pressure respirator to improve the breathing condition, which can achieve the most immediate effect. However, the results are limited due to the lack of cooperation of the patient. Snoring is mainly caused by nasal disease and obesity that lead to temporary suspension of sleep breathing, so it is important to improve the health of the nose and to control weight properly. According to a study conducted at the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil, by a team of sleep specialists, neurologists, acupuncturists, and physiologists, 36 patients with obstructive sleep apnea were treated with acupuncture for 10 weeks and showed significant improvements in both symptoms and multifunctional sleep tests. Acupuncture is an alternative complementary therapy for patients with sleep apnea. In Chinese medicine, there is a meridian called the “Hand Yang Ming Large Intestine Meridian” that travels around the bottom and sides of the nose. Stimulating specific acupuncture points on this meridian can regulate the circulation of qi and blood in the nose, resulting in improved nasal symptoms. Patients with such problems may wish to massage the Ying Xiang and Hegu points on this meridian. In addition, taking qi tonics can effectively strengthen muscle tone and restore some degree of elasticity to the flabby and sagging pharyngeal muscles, thus reducing the phenomenon of the respiratory tract being obstructed by the flabby muscles. This, together with herbal remedies to reduce swelling and eliminate stasis, can remove the deep chronic inflammatory growths, and this treatment will take about three months.
