Acupuncture with twitchless electroconvulsive therapy for depression

Depression is a major global mental health problem, mainly including core symptoms, psychological symptom clusters, and somatic symptom clusters is a common disease that endangers human health, and its incidence has gradually increased in recent years. Twitchless electroconvulsive therapy (MECT) has been widely used clinically as a physical therapy in psychiatry. Depression has been used as its preferred indication. However, its clinical application is severely limited by its high number of side effects and relative contraindications such as post-treatment cognitive impairment and its high price. Acupuncture, with its advantages of economy and rapid onset of action, has shown its superiority in the treatment of many diseases. Depression belongs to the category of “depression” and “dullness” in traditional Chinese medicine, which is caused by liver qi stagnation or heart and kidney deficiency. This is consistent with modern medicine’s view that the brain is the place where the body’s thinking activities take place. The clinical efficacy of MECT treatment in depression patients was found to reduce adverse effects and improve patient compliance. In conclusion, acupuncture with MECT is superior to MECT alone in the treatment of depression.
