Abstract: A mother brought her 3-year-old child to our hospital. After communicating with the mother, we learned that the child had fever and coughing manifestations, and after oral examination, we found white spots in the oral cavity in several places, which were diagnosed as thrush by fungal smear examination. After inquiring about the recent situation, the child’s physical condition decreased due to a heavy rainfall some time ago, so the child was treated with fluconazole tablets for more than 2 weeks and 5 days. After the treatment, the child’s physical symptoms disappeared.

I. Initial consultation
In April 2022, a mother brought her 3-year-old child to our hospital. The mother told me that her child was 3 years old and recently had a lot of white spots in his mouth for unknown reasons, and he also had fever and cough. I found through oral examination that the child’s oral mucosa was covered with white membranes on the tongue margin, oropharynx and buccal mucosa, and suspected that it was caused by thrush. By consulting the recent situation, it was considered that the oral infection might have been induced by the recent poor health caused by cold.
II. Treatment history
After the diagnosis of thrush was confirmed and after the consultation, the child was given fluconazole tablets, and the mother was instructed to give them to the child according to the treatment schedule. During the medication period, the child should be supervised to pay attention to oral hygiene, brush his teeth regularly in the morning and evening, do not bite objects at will, and pay attention to washing the child’s water bottle and dishes to clean the living environment. After 2 weeks of taking the medication, the child should come back to the clinic to check the treatment status. The mother of the child was also informed that she should follow the doctor’s prescription strictly during the treatment period. If the dosage of the drug is not appropriate, the treatment effect may not be achieved and the risk of adverse reactions may be increased.
Third, the effect of treatment
After using fluconazole tablets for 2 weeks according to the course and dosage, the mother brought her child to our hospital again for review. After oral examination, it was found that the white film on the edge of the tongue, oropharynx and buccal mucosa disappeared, the fever and cough symptoms also basically disappeared, and the child’s mental state was better. Through fungal smear examination, it was clear that there was no Candida albicans in the oral cavity, and it was determined that fluconazole tablets had good antibacterial effect, and the clinical symptoms of the child had disappeared.
IV. Notes
We are glad that, after a series of treatments, the symptoms of thrush in the child disappeared and a cure was achieved. However, since thrush often recurs in the clinic, the following conditions still need to be noted in the child’s life.
1. parents should supervise the child to brush his or her teeth every morning and every evening and to brush them cleanly, not to bite other things, and not to feed the child food that he or she has chewed, and to prepare clean, clean toys, toiletries and dishes for the child.
2. During the treatment period and after the treatment is healed, parents should insist on taking their children for proper exercise every day to improve their physical quality, which can help improve the fungal infection and help prevent infection after the condition improves.
V. Personal insight
Thrush is an infectious disease that often occurs in infants and young children, often dominated by Candida albicans infection. The onset of the disease is mostly related to the weaker immunity of infants and young children, oral exposure to unhygienic items or the use of immunosuppressive drugs. However, in addition to medication, thrush often requires the child and his or her family to cooperate in life coaching, including oral hygiene improvement and daily correction of bad habits of chewing toys, which is also extremely important for treatment and subsequent prevention. In this case, the child was treated with fluconazole tablets, and the thrush was cured by the standardized treatment, which is closely related to the child’s high sensitivity to fluconazole and the cooperation of the family with the treatment.
