What is the status of psychological counselor

It has been said that the counselor is a “garbage can” because the counselor has to accept different visitors with various negative emotions. It follows that psychological supervision is the process of cleaning up the “garbage can”. Although this analogy is quite graphic, it is not biased. It puts the counselor in a passive position, when in fact a professionally trained counselor should play the role of a “processor”. The counselor is to help the visitor to deal with his problems, not to take in all his problems and make them his own. At the same time, the counselor must also deal with his or her own problems, and when he or she encounters a visitor with the same problems as his or her own, he or she must be clear about which problems are the visitor’s and which are his or her own, and draw a clear line to protect his or her own psychological space from being violated. In addition, during the consultation, the counselor should not think about his or her own problems, but should serve the visitor 100% and achieve complete “help”. However, a “processing machine” is not a “universal machine”. “Helping people help themselves” is what every counselor aspires to, but in actual counseling, counselors inevitably want to educate others and guide them through their problems. A favorite phrase of many clinicians is: “Don’t be so sad! Don’t be so unhappy!” , and are especially fond of saying, “It’s nothing, don’t cry!” . This is very much in line with Eastern culture. Eastern culture originally believes that “the seven emotions and six desires hurt the body”, so when you see someone sad, you advise them not to be sad, which is a kind of comfort. However, for counselors, especially psychologists, it is not appropriate to say so. Because the visitor comes to counseling because of this sadness, telling him not to be sad is a bit like telling a hungry person who has nothing to eat not to be so hungry, which simply can not be done. A family member or friend can say that, but if a professional says that, the visitor’s first reaction is “you don’t accept my emotions”. On the contrary, a real empathetic word describing his emotions will give him a feeling of relaxation and acceptance, and the rest of the consultation will go smoothly. Therefore, a good “processor” should have a good empathy function. Of course, the “processing machine” will also encounter problems that cannot be handled, which can be completely transferred to others to solve.
