Why biopsy is needed for colon polyps

Colon polyps are also very common and can often be found under colonoscopy. Colon polyps are generally divided into two types, hyperplastic polyps and adenomatous polyps. Adenomatous polyps are subdivided into tubular adenomas, villous adenomas, and also mixed adenomas. Biopsy is performed to distinguish the nature of colon polyps because the prognosis of these two types of polyps is different. Proliferative polyps do not become cancerous, while adenomatous polyps have a tendency to become cancerous, especially villous adenomas, which have a very high cancer rate. Therefore, biopsy of colon polyps is very significant for the next step of treatment as well as prevention and prognosis, so biopsy must be performed.
