Currently, about 200 million people worldwide suffer from osteoporosis, most of them are middle-aged and elderly. The most serious consequence of osteoporosis is osteoporotic fracture. The prevalent sites are in the hip, distal forearm, and especially the spine, which manifests as pathological compression fractures of the vertebral body. In the past, osteoporotic compression fractures were usually treated by conservative methods, such as absolute bed rest and pharmacological analgesia. However, conservative treatment is usually ineffective, and the bed rest time is 6-8 weeks, with urination and defecation in bed, which brings a lot of inconvenience to care; moreover, elderly patients are also prone to a variety of complications such as bed sores, crushing pneumonia, and urinary tract infections when they are bed-ridden for a long time, which seriously affects the quality of life. Nowadays, a new method has been applied in our orthopaedic clinic to achieve satisfactory results in the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. This method is called percutaneous vertebroplasty. That is, it replaces conservative treatment. This minimally invasive procedure is performed under local anesthesia by threading a guide needle into the fractured vertebral body, which can be braced and repositioned, and then filled with bone cement, thus achieving immediate stabilization; generally patients can successfully move around on the ground after 24 hours postoperatively, eliminating the pain of prolonged bed rest, medication analgesia or fixation with braces for fracture patients. It is an effective, safe and simple procedure with small incision, short operation time and good analgesic effect. With this method combined with traditional functional exercises + herbal fumigation, the efficacy is further enhanced. Advantages: 1. local anesthesia, small trauma, the incision is only 0.5-1.0 cm; 2. patients can move around after 24 hours after surgery; 3. the chance of bone cement leakage is greatly reduced; 4. pain relief is fast, no need to use drugs for analgesia after surgery.
