Some patients have acute middle ear mastoiditis, which can manifest clinically as painful sensation in the mastoid area behind the ear. It is more common in children, and some adults with low resistance also appear. It is not difficult to diagnose the disease by examining the middle ear mastoid CT combined with the patient’s physical examination and medical history. Some patients have inflammation of the lymph nodes in the mastoid area behind the ear. Clinically, there can be swelling and pain of the lymph nodes in the sulcus behind the ear and in the mastoid area, and the inflammation can be caused by inflammation of the ear or inflammation of the parotid gland. Third, some patients have auricular herpes zoster infection, and the herpes virus invades the trigeminal nerve, resulting in pain behind the ear in the area where the trigeminal nerve is distributed. The pain is mostly paroxysmal and is more common in elderly patients.
