Anterior sternal pain is caused by the stimulation of nociceptive nerve fiber endings within the periosteum and fascia of the anterior sternum by irritating factors. It is common in trauma, sternal tumor, costochondritis, postoperative breast cancer or metastasis of sternum, lung cancer or malignant thymoma invasion.
1. Trauma: ① sternal fracture and soft tissue injury, the fracture end vibration can cause anterior sternal pain when coughing and breathing. Sternoclavicular joint dislocation can also cause sternal pain on the affected side.
2. Sternal tumor: various benign and malignant tumors of sternum can cause anterior sternal pain.
3. Costal chondritis: the costal cartilage is connected with the sternum, and costal chondritis can also cause sternal pain on the affected side.
4. Postoperative breast cancer or metastasis to the sternum: breast cancer can cause sternal pain by clearing the soft tissue in front of the sternum or metastasizing to the sternum.
5. Invasion of lung cancer or malignant thymoma: lung cancer and malignant thymoma can invade the soft tissues near the anterior mediastinum and sternum, causing anterior sternal pain.
