What is chalazion?

A chalazion in children is a small, round bag on the upper or lower eyelid that can be as large as a grain of rice or as large as a soybean or fava bean. It is a cyst caused by a blockage in the ducts of the eyelid’s lid gland, which causes the gland’s secretions to collect and prevent normal drainage. If this cyst is accompanied by bacterial infection, there will be redness, swelling, heat and pain, and even bleeding and ulceration of the skin surface with pus. Usually there are three endings of chalazion: 1. observation for half a month or a month, or you can apply hot compresses and it will disappear by itself. 2, long-term fixed, mechanized into granulation tissue, the formation of granuloma, long-term eyelid will have a bag, this situation, you can choose the time timing surgery. 3, ulceration or infection, ulceration refers to, in the conjunctival surface, or in the skin surface, produce ulceration. If the ulceration is incomplete, a conjunctival granuloma will grow on the conjunctival surface, and if the ulceration is incomplete on the skin surface, a skin granuloma will develop on the skin surface. In case of infection, the skin will be accompanied by redness, swelling, and pain. Treatment Usually chalazia, without infection, can be observed for half a month to a month, and some patients can absorb and disappear. If the chalazion does not absorb on its own, surgery can be considered. The surgery is usually performed through an internal incision, which is an incision on the conjunctival surface and does not leave a scar and does not require sutures, which is ideal. But the surgery is carried out under general anesthesia for the child, so many parents do not tolerate the surgery and worry that the child will suffer from the general anesthesia surgery, so the cyst is left for a long time. However, it is cautioned not to let the cyst come to surgery until it is almost burst because, at that time, an incision has to be made on the skin surface, which will leave a tiny scar on the eyelid. If the cyst is accompanied by infection, wheals, and redness, swelling, and pain, it is important to first reduce inflammation and not to rush surgery, otherwise the infection will spread like the orbit and cause cellulitis or even intracranial infection. If the pus in the infected site is volatile and the skin is thin, you can cut and drain the pus and leave a rubber strip for drainage in the infected cyst. In such children, most of them will have scarring or skin nodules and tissue hyperplasia after future healing, and a very small percentage will also have scarring ectropion. Cost of surgery: The cost of surgery varies from hospital to hospital, department to department, and level to level.
