How to improve the quality of life of people with depression?

Health-related quality of life, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), refers to the experience of individuals in different cultures and value systems regarding their survival in relation to their goals, expectations, standards, and concerns. This is a richly connoted concept when it comes to people’s somatic health (energy, sleep, sensory function. Sexual functioning, somatic discomfort, etc.), mental state (emotions, cognition, self-evaluation, etc.), and level of independence (ability to move. Ability to perform daily life, ability to work, dependence on medication and medical means, etc.), social relations (personal relationships, satisfaction with social support to which they belong, sexual life, etc.) and correlation with the characteristics of the environment in which they live (income, housing, employment, recreation, living environment and social order, etc.), spiritual pillars/religion/personal beliefs, etc. all have a combined effect on the quality of life. The level of quality of life of depressed patients is closely related to their social support status. Most of the social support for depressed patients comes from family and relatives, but less from social groups. Therefore, in addition to maintaining the original family support, we should also pay attention to the support from social groups. This kind of support from social groups can make patients experience the “sense of value and existence” of the society and enhance their confidence in fighting against the disease. The more social support patients receive, the better their quality of life. For elderly depressed patients, social support is particularly important, because elderly people often encounter psychological stress in their lives, not all medications are effective, such as illness, financial difficulties, loneliness, etc., so it is important to give solutions. The elderly people are all sick with many kinds of medications, drug interactions, should follow the doctor’s orders; give explanation, careful care, comfort, arrange life is one of the necessary methods; marriage and “grandchild therapy” to improve their loneliness, common language and the joy of family is one of the effective methods.
