Depression is a modern medical name. According to its clinical manifestations and ancient medical texts, its similar diseases include depression, epilepsy, dirty mania, and lily disease. The main pathological changes are qi dysregulation, resulting in qi stagnation, phlegm stasis, disturbance to the brain and the mind, and brain dysregulation; or the disease is prolonged, qi and blood essence cannot be honored in the brain, and the brain dysregulation, resulting in mood symptoms such as depression and reduced ability; the seven emotions are out of control, resulting in qi dysregulation in the five organs, phlegm stasis blocking the meridians, and various physical symptoms. The fundamental principle of acupuncture treatment for this disease is to regulate the mind and qi, and to take the points of the Governor meridian to strengthen the brain and regulate the mind, and to take the points of the liver meridian to de-stress the liver and regulate the emotions. The treatment of this disease focuses on de-stressing the liver and regulating qi, applying Baihui, Yin Tang points, Si Guan (Tai Chong, He Gu), Shenting, An Mian, Shen Men, and Sanyinjiao. In severe cases, acupuncture is applied once every other day, and in mild cases, once or twice a week.
