Treatment methods for liver cancer are roughly divided into four categories: surgical treatment, local treatment, radiotherapy and systemic treatment. Since most patients are already in the middle and late stages when liver cancer is discovered, and since liver cancer often occurs on the background of chronic liver disease, only about 20% of all cases have the chance of surgical resection. For this group of patients who have the chance of surgical resection, hepatic resection is still the most effective and preferred treatment method. Overall, the 5-year survival rate after resection of hepatocellular carcinoma is 30% – 40%; the 5-year survival rate after resection of microscopic hepatocellular carcinoma can reach about 90%; the 5-year survival rate after resection of small hepatocellular carcinoma can reach about 75%, which is impossible to be achieved by any other treatment methods.
