What is geriatric depression?

  At present, the material life of the majority of the elderly in China has been basically satisfied, but their spiritual life in terms of psychological needs, emotional care has not been more extensive attention. A survey shows that 50%-80% of the elderly disease patients in China are from the psychological diseases of the elderly, and about 70% of the psychological diseases are caused by the lack of spiritual care of the elderly, and the elderly who receive social and family comfort and consideration will live 10-15 years longer than those who do not have a good relationship with their children and do not receive care and love.  What are the characteristics of geriatric depression?  1.Suspiciousness Suspiciousness can involve digestive system symptoms, especially constipation and gastrointestinal discomfort is one of the most common and early symptoms of such patients. Therefore, excessive attention to normal somatic functions and overreaction to mild diseases should be considered as geriatric depression.  2. Agitation, i.e., anxiety and agitation, is characterized by anxiety and fear, worrying all day long that misfortune will befall oneself and one’s family, so that one rubs one’s hands and rests one’s feet, sitting and lying in anxiety. They may have insomnia at night, or repeatedly recall unpleasant events in the past, blame themselves for the misfortune of their families and others, and have no interest in anything in the environment. Some patients deny having depressive experiences, but repeatedly emphasize physical discomfort, such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, muscle pain, etc., which makes the mood disorder easy to be ignored by family members.  4.Delusional 5.Delusional 6.Depressive pseudo-dementia 7.Suicidal tendency The main risk factors leading to suicide are loneliness, guilt, hypochondriac symptoms, agitation, and persistent insomnia. Personality and the degree of depression perception are important additional factors in determining the risk of suicide, such as helplessness, hopelessness and negative attitude towards life.  Patients and their families should eliminate low self-esteem and actively seek medical care to be able to get a clear diagnosis and timely, standardized antidepressant treatment from the beginning. Having done so, the vast majority of depressed patients are completely able to get out of their predicament.
