After an episode of perianal abscess, there will be localised redness and swelling of the skin of the anus, accompanied by foci of infection and the formation of pus cavities, which can be treated with intravenous infusions of antibiotics. However, medication can only relieve symptoms and most patients will develop various types of anal fistula. Complete treatment of perianal abscesses requires further surgery.
