What is maculopathy?

Macula is an important part in the fundus of the eye that every person has, and we can see this beautiful world mainly depends on the function of macula. When macular lesions occur, our vision will rapidly decline and we may experience discomfort such as distortion, distortion, straight line curvature, and fixed black shadow obscuring in front of our eyes. Macular diseases include macular vitreous warts, neovascularization (macular degeneration), macular edema, macular ischemia, proliferative lesions in the macula, macular fissure, macular anterior membrane, old lesions in the macula (scarring, atrophy, pigmentation), pigment disorder in the macula, pigment epithelial detachment, neuroepithelial detachment, etc. In addition to the routine ophthalmic examination for the diagnosis of macular diseases, fluorescence angiography (FFA), chorioretinography (ICG) and OCT (optical coherence tomography) examination provide accurate information for the characterization and localization of the disease, and provide the basis for determining the treatment method. At home, we can apply Amsler table, or square paper, field book and other means for self-examination and early detection of symptoms for timely diagnosis. The treatment of macular disease varies according to the type and cause of macular disease. In the past, we could only give oral treatment with Chinese and Western medicines to activate blood circulation and resolve blood stasis. With the advancement of medical technology, the emergence of fundus laser treatment, vitreous surgery treatment and intraocular vitreous cavity injection, we are no longer helpless to treat macular disease, and apply different methods according to the patient’s lesion, or combine multiple methods to achieve the purpose of controlling the disease and saving vision. For example, macular degeneration is still incurable and requires long-term follow-up treatment to control the progress of the disease. We believe that in the future, we will be able to develop better treatments to help patients improve their vision.
