What is OCT screening technology?

Optical coherence tomography, is a non-invasive, non-contact, in vivo cross-sectional scan of the fine structures of the retina. It works similarly to ultrasound in that it uses light waves instead of sound waves to tomograph biological tissues using low coherent light and displays them graphically or digitally to provide quantitative diagnostic indicators. OCT is an indispensable diagnostic technique for macular diseases, which can clearly show the changes of retinal thickness and morphology in macular area, and plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment follow-up of age-related macular degeneration. 1, OCT examination technology features: 1, non-invasive: patients do not need to dilate the pupil before the examination, no auxiliary drugs, no risk of trauma; 2, painless: patients only receive low illumination optical in the process of adherence, so there is no flash irritation during fundus photography, patients can complete the examination without obvious discomfort; 3, convenient and fast: an OCT examination can usually be completed within 1 minute 4, good diagnostic effect: most of the current OCT examination equipment (referring to different manufacturers) can be at the 5UM level of resolution, not only high resolution, and retinal histological morphology display completely, the image is intuitive, so it can be called the living retinal cross-section microscopy technology. Second, the application value of OCT examination technology in macular degeneration diagnosis 1, the diagnostic role of age-related macular degeneration: before the invention of OCT technology, the diagnosis of macular degeneration can only rely on fundus fluorescence angiography. With OCT examination technology, it is possible to make preliminary diagnosis for patients with suspected macular deformation. Therefore, some patients who are not macular degeneration are quickly excluded, so that these patients can avoid unnecessary invasive examinations. 2.It helps to classify the degree of macular degeneration, and OCT examination can provide important diagnostic information such as the presence of CNV (choroidal neovascularization), and the relationship between CNV lesions and pigment epithelium of patients. 3. OCT examination can objectively reflect the treatment effect, including the change of macular thickness and whether the CNV lesion is shrinking or enlarging. For dry macular degeneration, fundus photography and OCT examination can make accurate diagnosis, while for wet macular degeneration, in addition to OCT examination, fundus fluorescence angiography and choroidal angiography are required. Third, OCT examination of normal eyes and age-related macular degeneration eyes are seen OCT examination is intuitive and convenient, and has an important role in the detection of macular lesions and the follow-up in treatment. Therefore, when elderly people find vision loss or visual distortion, they can initially determine whether the vision loss is related to macular degeneration by receiving a single OCT examination at the hospital. At present, besides macular diseases, OCT examination technology also plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, optic neuropathy and retinal vascular lesions.
