In clinical practice, we often encounter patients who ask, “Do I have a macula?” In fact, the macula is the most sensitive part of the retina in the eye, but some people may have macular lesions. Macular degeneration includes “age-related macular degeneration” and “pathological myopic macular degeneration”. ”Age-related macular degeneration” is divided into dry and wet. Dry macular degeneration refers to the appearance of vitreous warts (a yellowish-white pigmented subepithelial deposit) or macular atrophy in the macula. It can also develop into map-like atrophy. And wet refers to the appearance of choroidal neovascularization (also called CNV) in the macular area. Neovascularization is prone to recurrent bleeding because of the lack of peripapillary cells and the absence of tight junctions of normal endothelial cells. ”Pathological myopic macular degeneration” is due to prolongation of the eye and ischemia and hypoxia in the posterior pole of the eye, resulting in neovascularization of the macula or atrophy of the choroid, pigment epithelium and photoreceptors, thus seriously affecting vision. Therefore, the early prevention and treatment of macular degeneration is very important, and Chinese herbal medicine can play a certain role.
