TCM has unique advantages TCM attaches importance to holistic treatment and is good at treating diseases by adjusting the function of the whole body. Chinese medicine has a long history of anti-liver fibrosis research, with a wide range of studies and many samples, better efficacy, and less toxic side effects. The ultimate goal of any basic medical research is to solve patients’ problems and people’s health problems. Although China is inferior to foreign countries in basic research on liver fibrosis, Chinese medicine in China has unique advantages in clinical treatment and is in a world-leading position in terms of efficacy. At present, research on liver fibrosis in China is becoming increasingly developed and in-depth. According to the literature, there are many herbal formulas used for the treatment of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, such as Shu Liver Dissipation Pill, Plus Flavor Angelica Blood Tonic Soup, Huangqi Curcuma Soup, etc. Experimental and randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trials have demonstrated that herbal formulas based on Danshen have good anti-fibrotic effects. Liver biopsy review of patients with chronic hepatitis B treated with this medicine showed significant improvement in both inflammation and fibrosis scores. In addition, an experimental study of a herbal formula consisting of 11 herbs including turtle nail, red peony, panax notoginseng and cordyceps showed that the drug inhibited the proliferation of astrocytes, blocked their synthesis of collagen and non-collagenous proteins, enhanced collagenase activity, and had an anti-fibrotic effect on the liver. Clinical trials have shown that the drug leads to significant histological improvement in liver fibrosis caused by chronic hepatitis B. Fully in accordance with international histological standards, it can be proved that TCM can reverse liver fibrosis. At present, except for antiviral treatment with long-term efficacy observation, no real international drug against liver fibrosis in a narrow sense has entered clinical research, and we should be confident that TCM has great potential in this regard. Using the advantages of traditional medicine, our researchers have come up with several anti-liver fibrosis treatment rules and corresponding formulas, which have been clinically applied with efficacy. One of the characteristics of Chinese medicine treatment is multi-link and multi-target, and we should focus on the mechanism and target of Chinese medicine anti-liver fibrosis treatment. Only when these are clarified can we achieve a more optimal treatment purpose. The so-called combination of Chinese and Western medicine does not mean prescribing some Western medicine to this patient and then prescribing a Chinese medicine prescription, but to complement each other with the ultimate goal of reducing the development of chronic hepatitis and improving the prognosis of the patient. In terms of combined Chinese and Western medicine anti-liver fibrosis treatment, China has obtained some drugs that have been confirmed by evidence-based medicine, and there are many therapeutic tools that can be applied. At the same time, anti-liver fibrosis should pay attention to combined anti-viral therapy with modern medicine, which can reduce the progression of the disease and achieve a better treatment effect. Not all patients need drug therapy ▪ There are many causes of liver fibrosis, so anti-liver fibrosis treatment involves many aspects, and not all patients with liver fibrosis need to use drug therapy. Liver fibrosis can be caused by a variety of reasons, and the treatment varies. One type is due to alcoholic hepatitis, which is caused by the patient’s regular alcohol consumption. The key for patients with this type of liver fibrosis is to advise them not to drink alcohol, not to treat them medically. One category is chronic liver disease that occurs due to low activity and eating well, which causes fatty liver. For such patients, the key is to advise them to exercise actively and control their diet, rather than overemphasize taking medication. One category is drug-related liver disease, whose cirrhosis can also occur. The key for such patients is to get them off their medications. The last category is liver fibrosis caused by viral hepatitis. For this kind of patients, antiviral treatment is the key, and also add anti-liver fibrosis treatment into it. This way the treatment will be more effective. The liver is a strong but fragile organ. In its normal state, it is strong enough to undertake a lot of important work: synthesis, metabolism, detoxification for the body, and all kinds of drugs have to pass through its metabolism and be excreted from the body. However, when it becomes diseased, it becomes vulnerable and any injury can aggravate its damage. Therefore, experts emphasize that the treatment of liver fibrosis should be both aggressive and not excessive. Patients should be treated aggressively as early as possible when they know they have liver fibrosis, but they should prevent overmedication while being treated aggressively. Patients should firstly follow up regularly, secondly go to a regular hospital for treatment, and thirdly do not choose drugs by looking at advertisements. However, at present, a significant proportion of liver fibrosis patients take medication by looking at advertisements. So doctors must follow up regularly to know the current status of patients’ treatment. One should be sure that active treatment is effective for liver fibrosis. In Japan, there is a proportion of liver fibrosis patients who have been on medication for 15 years and their incidence of cirrhosis and liver cancer has been significantly reduced. Therefore, patients with liver fibrosis must be actively treated under the guidance of their doctors. Experts point out that, in addition to medication for liver fibrosis, patients need to have a healthy lifestyle, and good results can only be achieved through comprehensive treatment. Prevention of chronic liver disease must start with children and reduce childhood obesity.
