What is the relationship between psychosocial factors and depression?

Many patients’ families tell their doctors that they are depressed because of some kind of shock such as loss of love, loss of a loved one, interpersonal relationships, chronic depression, and so on. This is one-sided, because the psychosocial factors that contribute to depression are only one aspect, but have a very important role to play. Poor parenting in infancy, childhood abuse or neglect, loss events such as bereavement, divorce, serious illness in the immediate family, or loss of employment, and poor living conditions such as poverty, unemployment, difficulties in life, and lack of care from loved ones are all factors that can trigger depression.
