How long does it take to recover from depression-induced mental retardation?

Sluggishness of the brain caused by depression can usually be recovered with satisfactory symptom control over 3 months of systematic treatment, but there are individual differences. Depression is a serious mental illness and patients with depressive episodes manifest as inhibition of mental activity in the brain, such as manifestation of persistent depressed mood, diminished interest, slowed thinking, and slowed attention. The recovery of brain function in depressed patients usually improves gradually as the condition improves. Usually patients with depression can have their medications take effect in about 2 weeks with systematic antidepressant treatment and adequate dosage. As the patient’s mood improves, the patient’s memory begins to return to normal, the mind starts to become active, and the patient is able to focus on things. If the treatment is timely, the patient’s depressive symptoms disappear in about 6-8 weeks, and if the symptoms need to disappear completely it takes about 3 months or more for the brain activity to basically return to normal. However, there are specific differences in some patients and the recovery time can be prolonged. In addition, if patients resume normal work and life, they still need to continue to take medication for 4-6 months of consolidation treatment.
