The dangers of precocious puberty and treatment methods

About precocious puberty Precocious puberty refers to the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics in boys before the age of 9 or 9 1/2 and in girls before the age of 8. The appearance of menstruation in girls before the age of 10 is also considered precocious puberty. The early development of simple breasts is common. Due to the improvement of living conditions and other reasons, the proportion of precocious sexual maturity has a tendency to increase year by year. According to statistics, the proportion of precocious puberty in major cities in China has reached 3%. There are many causes of precocious puberty, including somatic, exogenous estrogen intake, cranial trauma, tumor, infection, etc., or one of the symptoms of certain syndromes. To determine the cause, further tests such as sex hormone test, bone age test, LHRHa excitation test, etc. are needed. In addition to the effects of the primary disease, precocious puberty mainly causes adverse psychological effects on the affected children, and can even lead to lifelong effects due to the development of personality deformities. True precocious puberty affects the lifelong adult height because of the premature onset of puberty and the shortening of the pubertal phase. For idiopathic central precocious puberty, there are four main objectives of treatment: (1) to improve adult lifelong height; (2) to inhibit the development of secondary sexual characteristics and restore psychological behavior in accordance with the actual age; (3) to delay the age of menarche; and (4) to prolong the pubertal phase. If timely treatment can be given, the above treatment objectives can be achieved in general.
