What does LOP fetal position mean?

LOP fetal position means that the fetus is in the left posterior occipital position, which is a type of cephalic position in fetal orientation. It is generally understood to mean that the fetal head is facing downward and the fetal occipital bone is facing to the left posterior side of the mother. The left posterior occipital position is normal before delivery, but the posterior occipital position is not the best position to pass through the pelvis. Before delivery, the position and posture of the fetus in the uterus can change continuously, and the final fetal orientation can be determined only at the time of delivery. In general, during labor, along with the uterine contraction pressure, the fetal head descends, the fetus can be bent and rotated, constantly adapting to the direction of the pelvic birth canal output, usually to the left occipito-anterior position, that is, the opposite direction to the mother’s face, this position is the easiest to deliver. In addition, the midwife can also rotate the fetal position by manipulation during labor, which usually can be converted to occipital left-anterior or occipital right-anterior position. If the fetal head cannot be shifted to the normal position during labor, the delivery of the fetal head from the mother’s birth canal is more difficult and a cesarean delivery is required. For pregnant women in LOP fetal position, it is recommended to sleep in the left lateral position, which is conducive to enhancing the blood oxygen supply in the placenta and preventing the occurrence of intrauterine hypoxia.
