How long can you live after open-heart surgery?

The survival time of patients after craniotomy is related to the original disease, surgical outcome, and postoperative complications, and cannot be generalized. In the case of light or medium-sized craniocerebral injury, such as mild cerebral contusion, mild subarachnoid hemorrhage, etc., if the surgical procedure is relatively smooth and there is no significant secondary hemorrhage or severe cranial nerve dysfunction after surgery, and no secondary cerebral edema occurs, the patient’s life is usually not affected and can survive for a long time. In the case of patients with heavy or special type of craniosynostosis, such as brainstem injury and large intracranial hematoma, the patient’s life can be endangered by various serious postoperative comorbidities. In addition, if it is a malignant brain tumor, the survival time of patients after surgery is also relatively short, such as glioblastoma, the average survival time is usually not more than 1 year. After craniotomy, patients should try to have a high quality protein diet, as well as moderate intake of fiber-rich vegetables and fruits to prevent constipation.
