Bone tuberculosis is an ancient disease that has been found in mummies as far back as 5,000 years ago. Humans have had a long battle with tuberculosis. Chinese herbal medicine has a long history in the treatment of tuberculosis, but there is no ideal way to cure it. Otherwise, Mr. Lu Xun would not have had to fight for human blood buns to treat his son’s consumption, and Cao Xueqin would not have had to take a lot of medicine and ask people what kind of medicine she was taking, but she still died of consumption. Consumption, also known as tuberculosis, has afflicted mankind for thousands of years, and mankind really began to fight the tuberculosis bacterium in 1943, when the first anti-tuberculosis drug streptomycin was born. The discovery of streptomycin enabled humans to actually kill the tuberculosis bacterium. Ultimately, tuberculosis is a bacterial infection, so medication is always the first priority. This may need to be supplemented with surgery in cases of severe bone destruction, huge abscesses and spinal cord compression. Comprehensive treatment is the right way to treat bone tuberculosis. Relying on Chinese medicine alone or believing in some exaggerated herbal treatments will only delay the disease. This is certainly not to deny the therapeutic effect of Chinese medicine, but to emphasize that patients with bone tuberculosis should not go into the wrong direction. Bone tuberculosis should be treated in a comprehensive manner, and Chinese medicine can assist but is never the only one.
