How to treat recurrent depression

The treatment of prognosis follows the principle of whole-course treatment, including the acute phase treatment, consolidation phase treatment and maintenance phase treatment. The acute phase treatment is mainly focused on controlling symptoms and trying to achieve clinical cure. At the same time, it promotes the recovery of patients’ social functions and improves their quality of life. Treatment in the consolidation phase is focused on preventing the relapse of the disease, which is unstable and easy for patients to relapse during this period. The treatment plan is the same as the acute phase treatment, maintaining the original drug type, dose and method of administration. The aim of maintenance treatment is to reduce the rate of relapse and recurrence of depression. Currently, there is a lack of valid research on the duration of maintenance treatment, which is generally considered to be at least 2-3 years. For recurrent episodes or those with significant residual symptoms, long-term maintenance treatment is advocated. In other words, scholars are advocating long-term maintenance treatment for recurrent depression, because scholars believe that the probability of relapse after stopping medication for recurrent depression is 100%.
