Dexamethasone is one of the most commonly used drugs for the treatment of gout. Dexamethasone is a long-acting glucocorticoid with good anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects, and is also a more commonly used drug for patients with gout. Gout is a crystal-associated arthritis caused by hyperuricemia, typically manifesting as redness, swelling, heat, pain and dysfunction of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, as well as dorsal foot pain, heel pain, and swelling and pain of other joints such as the ankle, hand and knee joints. Colchicine and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as etoricoxib, are generally more commonly used for treatment. If these two types of drugs do not work well or are contraindicated and cannot be applied, only then glucocorticoids, such as dexamethasone, are chosen for treatment to relieve symptoms. Routinely, dexamethasone is not used as a routine treatment, but can be used as a second-line pain relief option.
