During the National Day holiday, friends and family get together and inevitably eat a lot, disrupting their daily work and rest schedules, and some people even have no wine at the table, all of these “holiday habits” are taboo for people with fatty liver.
In recent years, the incidence of fatty liver has been increasing, and more and more young patients. How can these patients spend the long holidays without aggravating their condition? Experts from Shuguang Hospital of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine gave the following five suggestions. Sun Mingyu, Department of Liver Cirrhosis, Shanghai Shuguang Hospital East Hospital
The liver is an important metabolic organ of the human body, and abnormal metabolism of fatty liver often accelerates and aggravates the occurrence or deterioration of coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, hyperuricemia, gallstone disease, etc.
In recent years, the incidence of fatty liver has been increasing year by year and has become the most common liver disease affecting people’s health. In China, the incidence of fatty liver is more than 20%, and the incidence is even higher among civil servants, white-collar workers, cab drivers and individual owners, and it is getting younger. The incidence of the disease can be more than 50% in obese and sub-healthy people who exceed 50% of the standard weight, and is mostly concentrated in men between 30 and 60 years old.
Crab as little as possible to eat
This year, the National Day holiday coincides with the time when hairy crabs are available. Crab meat is high in protein and calories, and also contains fat, so patients with fatty liver should not eat it or eat it in a limited amount to avoid increasing the burden on the liver.
Associate Professor Sun Mingyu of the Department of Cirrhosis, Shuguang Hospital, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, suggests that patients with mild to moderate fatty liver who have normal transaminases can eat once in a while, one at a time, but not too much. The most important thing is that it is not suitable for people with severe fatty liver or elevated transaminase liver function damage to eat crab.
Compared to crab meat, the purine content in crab yolk is extremely high, so patients with fatty liver combined with high uric acid or gout should not eat it. In addition to crab yolk, other seafood seeds, animal offal, sardines, anchovies, and thick broth should not be consumed.
Don’t just eat vegetarian
Professor Sun Mingyu said that many fatty liver patients have the idea that they can only eat vegetarian and not meat. In fact, suffering from fatty liver needs protein more, and it is high-quality protein. Ensuring a daily intake of 80 grams to 100 grams of high-quality protein, such as lean pork, beef, fish, egg whites and milk, is instead conducive to removing fat from the liver. This is because a high protein diet can promote the recovery and regeneration of liver cell function and increase the synthesis of apolipoproteins, especially very low density lipoproteins, which facilitates the smooth transport of lipids out of the liver and reduces fatty liver. Inadequate protein intake, on the contrary, will intensify the deposition of fat in the liver.
For patients with fatty liver, foods to be avoided as much as possible are: whole milk, egg yolk, animal oil, animal offal, chicken skin, fatty meat, fish roe, crab yolk, fried food, etc.
In addition, the diet should be low in calories, fat, salt, vitamins, minerals and orange fiber.
Fruits preferred to grapes
Patients with fatty liver should try to choose fruits with relatively low sugar content, high water content and relatively slow rise of blood sugar, such as watermelon, grapefruit, apple, pear and kiwi with relatively low sugar content, while banana, lychee, mangosteen and honey orange have higher sugar content.
Professor Sun Mingyu pointed out that you can eat more grapes in moderation to nourish and protect your liver. Grapes contain natural active substances, vitamins and fiber, which are very beneficial to patients with fatty liver. The polyphenols contained in grapes are natural free radical scavengers with strong antioxidant activity, which can effectively adjust the function of liver cells and resist or reduce the damage caused by free radicals to them. The rich glucose, amino acids and many vitamins are very effective in protecting the liver, reducing ascites and swelling of the lower limbs, as well as raising plasma albumin and lowering transaminases. Although grapes are good, but the daily consumption should not be too much, it is best to consume the fruit while reducing the corresponding amount of staple food.
Don’t drink too much during the holidays
Medical research shows that a healthy person weighing 60 kilograms can only metabolize 60 grams of alcohol per day, and if the limit is exceeded, it can affect liver health and even endanger lives.
Professor Sun Mingyu said that many people who are found to have fatty liver do not pay sufficient attention to it, thinking that it will not be a big problem, and therefore do not limit their alcohol consumption.
The main component of alcohol is ethanol, which can be converted into acetaldehyde in the liver, and they have a direct damaging effect on the liver, causing degeneration and necrosis of liver cells. Fatty liver patients’ liver cells have been replaced by a large number of fat cells, the ability to metabolize ethanol is greatly reduced, if you drink a lot of alcohol, it can be said to add insult to injury, will accelerate the development of the condition to steatohepatitis, liver fibrosis, cirrhosis.
Staying up late hurts the liver the most
During the holidays, the normal daily routine is often disrupted. Professor Sun reminds that fatty liver patients should pay special attention not to stay up late.
According to TCM theory, 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. is the time when qi and blood infuse the bile meridian, while 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. is the time when qi and blood run to the liver meridian. If you do not sleep well and rest during this time, it is not conducive to maintaining a good liver and gallbladder. A good liver and gallbladder can make a person look rosy and have clear vision. On the contrary, if one stays up late often, it will make one’s liver and gallbladder weak and greenish-black. Therefore, patients with liver disease should try to rest before 11 p.m. to ensure sufficient sleep.
