Gout is a crystal-related arthropathy caused by urate deposition, and its onset is directly related to hyperuricemia caused by disorders of purine metabolism and/or reduced uric acid excretion, which belongs to the category of metabolic rheumatism. Gout is common in middle-aged and elderly men, more common above the age of 40, and in women after menopause, the prevalence of gout in China is about 0.32% to 2.84%. However, with the improvement of material living standard, the prevalence of gout in China is increasing year by year and showing a younger trend. Hyperuricemia is the basis for the occurrence of gout. Genetics, high purine diet, kidney disease and drugs can all lead to hyperuricemia and induce gout. In the acute stage of gout, sudden onset of single joint redness, swelling and heat pain is the main manifestation, and the joints of the lower extremities are more frequent, but it can also spread to the knees, fingers, wrists, elbows and other joints. In the acute stage of gout, the joint swelling and pain is severe, but it is self-limiting and may resolve on its own within a few days or 2 weeks. As the disease develops, gout patients may develop enlarged gout stones, which are deposited in joints, kidneys and other parts of the body. Gout patients may have elevated blood uric acid levels in laboratory tests, and urate crystals may be observed on imaging. The treatment of gout is divided into two parts: the acute phase, intermittent phase and remission phase. The main treatment principle in the acute phase is to rapidly relieve joint swelling and pain, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkillers, colchicine and glucocorticoids are commonly used. In the intermittent and remission periods, the main treatment principle is to lower the blood uric acid level, and drugs that promote uric acid excretion and inhibit uric acid production are commonly used. In addition, Chinese medicine also has a certain therapeutic effect in the treatment of gout. Therefore, early diagnosis, systematic and standardized treatment is the key to maintain the stability of gout, a disease with high incidence and great danger.
