In our daily outpatient work, there are many patients with depression and insomnia who can be treated by medication, acupuncture and psychotherapy, but there are also some unique treatments that can improve the patient’s symptoms. The one I will introduce here is the herbal foot bath. If I prescribe Chinese herbal medicine to an outpatient, I tend to advocate that it be boiled twice, once for drinking and once for soaking the feet at night. The concentration of Chinese medicine is often optimal when it is boiled for the first time, which is also the key to the effectiveness of Chinese medicine. The second time you boil the concentration of Chinese medicine is diluted, this time drinking is often ineffective, then you can soak your feet at night, by improving the meridians and blood to work, equivalent to acupuncture. Chinese medicine foot soak must not use metal and plastic basin, certain Chinese medicine may react with metal or plastic. It is best to use a natural wooden bucket, followed by an enamel basin, but the height should be at least 5-8 cm above the ankle (at the three yin jiao), the conditions can be soaked to the calf. The water temperature to warm and not burn the skin, can tolerate as degree. Suspend the soaking if there is skin breakage (except in the case of dry chapped skin rupture). Outpatient herbal medicine is often better suited to the patient’s constitution. If a patient is not taking herbal treatment, see if you can treat the foot with the following medicines: 30g of angelica, 15g of Chuanxiong, 15g of red peony, 15g of cinnamon stick, 15g of cooked fenugreek, 15g of ginger, decocted for 40 minutes and then bathe the foot. Warming Yang and promoting circulation of Yang, nourishing Blood and invigorating Blood. Common in women, poor sleep, with Blood deficiency, cold hands and feet, easy numbness of limbs during sleep, irregular menstruation, may have dysmenorrhea or blood clots. 15g of cinnamon powder, 15g of Sichuan pepper powder, 15g of dried ginger powder and a large pinch of coarse salt. The coarse salt in this formula leads the medicines to return to the kidney meridian, warms the kidney and nourishes yang, restores the spirit during the day and allows sleep at night. Because cinnamon and Sichuan pepper cannot be decocted for a long time, so powder can be soaked. Elderly people with kidney yang deficiency, daytime mental incompetence, frequent drowsiness, fear of cold, cold limbs, shallow sleep at night and easy to wake up, frequent night urination. Chinese medicine foot soak often soak until your back feels slightly sweaty, or forehead sweating, even if it is good. Note, do not sweat a lot. Because sweating is not only hurt fluid, but also easy to hurt the qi and Yang. Some people soak 20 minutes to sweat, while some people need to soak a long time to sweat, and some are not even sweating. Of course, if you soak for 40 minutes and still do not sweat, do not soak again. Soaking for too long is not beneficial to the body.
