As a student of Academician Li Jieshou, I always remember the first class of General Surgery given by Academician Li when I was a medical student. General Surgery is an important link course for medical students in the transition from basic medicine to clinical medicine, covering the basic theoretical knowledge and basic skills of various surgical disciplines. Through the study of the general theory of surgery, we can understand the history of the development of surgery in the world, familiar with the scope of modern surgery and its classification, and thus understand the necessity and importance of learning and mastering the basic theory, basic knowledge and basic skills of surgery. Therefore, it is very important for medical students to know who will take the general surgery class and how to elaborate the general surgery class, and it can even be said to have a lifelong impact, at least for me. At that time, the first class on general surgery was given by Academician Li, and we were very excited. Before the class, we already knew about Academician Li’s brilliant achievements, and learned that he is the leader of clinical nutrition support in China, and has the largest number of cases of intestinal fistula with the best results in the world. It will be a lifelong benefit for us to get so close to the famous surgical expert and academician of the Academy of Engineering who we admire, listen to his lectures and get his teachings. Academician Li’s broad forehead, kind face and wise gaze, an image of an amiable old grandfather left a deep impression on me, however, what I remembered more was that Academician Li gave us a vivid account of the history of the development of surgery, new advances in surgery, and depicted a bright blueprint of surgery. Academician Li combined his decades of clinical work and scientific research experience, efforts and achievements to explain the development and progress of surgery, and with his profound understanding of surgery, he looked forward to the bright future of surgery. The lectures of Academician Lai captivated me and brought me to the magical and sacred hall of surgery, and made me choose surgery as the direction of my life, and choose to pursue my master’s and doctoral degrees as a student of Academician Lai in the treatment of enterocutaneous fistula patients. As a student, I was curious to know how the academician could achieve such brilliant achievements in so many fields after his busy clinical work in surgery, clinical treatment of patients, etc. The academician kindly and seriously told us that he insisted on reading for two hours every night so that he could always be in the leading position in his field. He also encouraged us to be diligent in studying the difficult problems we encountered and to read the relevant literature to make our knowledge deeper. In order to increase our knowledge and broaden our horizons, academician Li Jieshou, together with academician Li Lei Shi, also donated more than 2,000 medical books to our students at Nanjing University School of Medicine, and encouraged us to swim in the ocean of knowledge and try our best to learn the nutrients of knowledge. It is not an easy thing for students who have enough time to read for two hours every night, let alone a person who is eighty years old, who is also the vice president of the hospital and the director of the Institute of General Surgery of the whole army, etc. What kind of perseverance is needed for decades. This time, Academician Li led our Institute of General Surgery to win the First Prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress, so I sincerely feel proud of Academician Li, this award is also the praise of Academician Li who insisted on reading two hours every night for so many years. As a member of the Institute of General Surgery and as a student, the image of Academician Li concentrating on reading and writing under the lamp, in order to diagnose and cure the pain of the people’s diseases, appeared before my eyes again. This also inspires me to study more diligently, work harder, and try harder to solve the pain of patients.
