The most important thing children need from their parents is love, followed by organization. One of the main ways to keep children’s lives organized is to give children credit for correct behavior. All children need rules and discipline. Organization makes children feel secure. Rules will help children develop control over their own behavior. Children need to take what their parents demand of them and translate it into self-demands in order to gain self-control. Over time, control over children’s behavior shifts from external to internal (children’s self-requirements). Children are not born with the ability to self-manage. Children develop self-management only when their parents demand that they follow the rules that have been established, expect proper behavior, and have constraints on what they can and cannot do.
