Why don’t doctors’ children study medicine?

Why don’t doctors’ children study medicine? Recently, a doctor’s child posted online, “My mother said that if I become a doctor, I will break my legs!” According to the survey, it has become a common phenomenon that doctors do not want their children to study medicine. The Chinese Medical Association conducted a survey on doctors’ attitudes toward their children studying medicine. It was found that the proportion of doctors who did not want their children to study medicine was increasing: 53% in 2002, 63% in 2004 and 78% in 2011. From a worldwide perspective, doctors are an enviable profession because they have both a lucrative financial income and a high social status. In foreign countries, many talented people are willing to pay high tuition fees and great efforts to study medicine, mainly because although the investment of doctors is high, the return is also high. Once you get a physician’s license, you can be clothed, fed and respected. In our country, the aura of a doctor’s career is fading. Not only is it difficult to recruit top students to medical schools, but there is also a serious brain drain in the physician workforce. Some people even say, “If you hate someone, tell them to become a doctor.” This phenomenon is thought-provoking. Why are doctors reluctant to let their children study medicine? The main reasons are high investment, high risk, high pressure and low income. In fact, once a person chooses to become a doctor, it often means a lifetime of dedication and sacrifice. A medical student, after 5 to 11 years of academic education, has to go through a lot of clinical practice before he or she can grow into a doctor. Because medical technology is changing rapidly, doctors must continue to learn in order to keep up with the trend and not be eliminated. The hard work involved is self-evident. More importantly, doctors are a high-intensity, high-risk profession. Faced with a large number of patients, not only need to work overload, but also can not make any mistakes. Therefore, doctors are “as deep as the abyss, like walking on thin ice” every day, the spirit is in a state of high tension for a long time. Even so, doctors must be ready to deal with medical disputes and even “medical trouble”. It is clear that it is not easy to be a doctor. In contrast, the income of doctors in all social classes is not high. Although there are doctors get rich by “gray income”, but only a few. If we only count the “sunshine income”, the majority of doctors’ income can not reflect the value of their labor. At present, the price of drugs in China is abnormally high, while the price of medical services is abnormally low. “The doctor is better than the fortune-teller”, “the scalpel is better than the razor”, “the needle is better than the shoe”, is the most image of the note. In fact, if doctors do not receive the same value in return for their efforts over time, the entire medical industry is bound to be undervalued. The famous economist Adam Smith once said that in a society, doctors and lawyers should be paid more for their work because we entrust our health to doctors and our property and even our reputation to lawyers. In China, it is socially controversial whether doctors should be paid well or not. In fact, if we compare doctors with pilots, the answer will be clear. Objectively speaking, doctors are far more difficult to train than pilots, and their occupational risks and work intensity also exceed those of pilots. However, the main reason why airlines pay pilots high salaries is for passenger safety, so that pilots only think about flying in their heads. Similarly, the reason why the state should give doctors high salaries is to make them think only about seeing patients and not about how to make money to support their families. In fact, let doctors get a reasonable and legitimate high salary with dignity, on the surface is to increase the cost of manpower, but in fact is to change the “medicine to feed the doctor” to “technology to feed the doctor”, and ultimately reduce the unreasonable expenditure on medicine. Of course, to make doctors an attractive profession, it is necessary to respect doctors not only in terms of income, but also in terms of personality. Right now, the people of the difficult to see a doctor, expensive to see a doctor reflect strongly, doctor-patient disputes occur from time to time. In fact, the root cause of many problems does not lie in the doctor, but in the unreasonable medical system. Therefore, only to speed up the medical reform, to solve the institutional problems affecting the harmony of doctors and patients, to create a good practice environment for doctors, in order to reshape the professional dignity of doctors. If teachers are the engineers of the human soul, doctors are the protectors of human life. Let the best people take care of life, is a sign of a society back to rationality. If first-rate talents go to sell drugs and second-rate talents become doctors, who would dare to entrust their lives to doctors?
