Patients with kidney disease have abnormal kidney function, so that a large amount of protein in the blood is excreted in the urine or excess water cannot be excreted from the body, resulting in a decrease in the osmotic pressure in the blood and water in the plasma leaking through the walls of blood vessels to tissues with a higher osmotic pressure. Oedema is more likely to occur in the eyelid area and swelling may also occur in the hands.
In addition to oedema in the hands and other areas, patients with kidney disease may also have abnormalities in urine colour, urine volume and voiding, as well as weakness. Checking urine protein will be elevated.
