Chronic kidney disease secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT): referred to as secondary hyperparathyroidism, is a syndrome in which low blood calcium, high blood phosphorus, and reduced synthesis and secretion of active vitamin D caused by chronic kidney disease combine to stimulate excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone, resulting in multisystem damage. It can cause severe damage to the bones and can exacerbate abnormalities in calcium and phosphorus metabolism, causing pruritus, anaemia, neurological damage and cardiovascular disease.
