Why can’t counseling solve the problem at once?

The length of time needed for counseling depends on the nature of the client’s problem. If your problem belongs to the category of developmental counseling, that is to say, your problem is a confusion or obstacle in the process of personal growth, it can be solved after one or two counseling sessions. However, if your problem belongs to the category of health counseling, such as all kinds of negative emotional problems, bad behavior problems, neurotic psychological problems, personality problems, etc., it is necessary to go through a counseling process, and the specific time required depends on the nature, duration and severity of the psychological problem. For example, neurotic psychological problems such as depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder for more than 10 years cannot be solved by 1 to 2 psychological counseling sessions. This is because there is a natural process that leads to the resolution of psychological problems. Therefore, you cannot expect that a single counseling session will solve the problem. For example, the transformation of misconceptions that lead to psychological problems, the elimination of unhealthy behavioral patterns, and the trauma of unfortunate childhood experiences cannot be solved overnight. The formation of adaptive thinking patterns and behaviors also takes time, and it is impossible to snap your fingers and develop adaptive behavioral habits in a few hours. Therefore, a degree of patience with psychological problem solving is necessary. The length of time needed for psychological problem solving generally depends on two factors. The first factor is the level of cooperation of the client. If the client is not willing to solve the problem or does not actively cooperate with the counselor’s requests, this can delay the resolution of the psychological problem. The second factor is the duration and generalization of the problem. The longer the psychological problem is formed the longer it takes, and the greater the impact of the psychological problem on work, study, life, family and other aspects of life, the longer it takes to solve it. Psychological counseling is a continuous and dynamic process, and the solution to psychological problems cannot be achieved in just one or two counseling sessions. Many visitors give up as soon as they hear that counseling requires their own efforts, but such avoidance behavior and dependency will only aggravate the visitor’s psychological problems. More visitors give up because counseling does not solve the problem in one session, and allow themselves to be in a state of negative emotions or bad behavior for a long period of time, which turns the psychological problem into a mental illness. Counseling is a science that helps visitors solve their psychological problems, and only when it can help them solve their psychological problems can it be formed into a science. Therefore, counseling can solve psychological problems as long as we use scientific methods. The scientific method is: professionally trained counselors use the techniques and methods of counseling, and with the cooperation of the visitor, help the helper solve psychological problems through a counseling process.
