Preferred method of treatment for upper esophageal cancer

For esophageal cancer located in the upper segment, it depends on the patient’s heart and lung function and the size of the mass lesion. In the past, the preferred treatment for upper esophageal cancer was radiotherapy, because surgery may be more invasive, requiring a triple incision for radical treatment of esophageal cancer, and the results after surgery may not be very good and may be prone to early recurrence and metastasis, so radiotherapy may be safer. But now there is also a full lumpectomy method called OrVil, which is fully operable for upper esophageal cancer and can be anastomosed through the pharynx. Therefore, with the advancement of new methods, the preferred treatment method for upper esophageal cancer should be decided based on the patient’s physical condition and whether there is metastasis elsewhere.
