What should I pay attention to in my diet after gallbladder stone surgery?

After surgery, the whole digestive system will be affected due to the stimulation of the stomach and intestines, reduced peristalsis, inhibition of liver function and lower bile secretion. Therefore, 1-2 days after surgery, strict fasting should be applied, and intravenous drip is appropriate to supplement various nutrients. From the 3rd day onwards, a liquid diet, such as rice soup, soy milk, lotus root powder, fruit juice, etc., may be given, and then gradually changed to skim milk with sweet bread, rice porridge, bean curd soup, date paste, rice paste and pasta, etc.  Within 1 month after surgery, the intake of fatty foods should be reduced, and high-fat and fried foods should be prohibited. Some people think that after the “lesion” is removed, the low-fat diet of the past can be changed, which is wrong. After the gallbladder is removed, the function of regulating the bile discharge into the intestine will be lost, and the digestion ability of fat will be weakened accordingly. Especially in a short period of time to digest a larger amount of fatty foods, that is beyond the power, will cause bloating, diarrhea and indigestion, etc.. Reduce fatty intake, mainly refers to not eat or minimize fatty meat, animal offal, egg yolk and fried food, but also should not eat all kinds of high-fat, high-calorie “fast food”. Cooking with animal oil as little as possible, can increase the amount of vegetable oil. Dishes should be steamed, stewed, cold mainly, less fried dishes, especially to avoid spicy and stimulating food, do not drink alcohol, so as to reduce the adverse stimulation of the bile duct. Gradually strengthen nutrition. After 1 month of gallbladder removal, the diet should also be pursued lightly, and strengthening the necessary nutritional supplements will help the patient recover early. After several weeks of adaptation to compensate, the common bile duct connecting the liver and small intestine gradually stretches and expands, replacing the gallbladder’s function of storing bile. If there is no abnormal digestive function, a normal diet can be consumed. Protein intake can be increased appropriately by eating foods with high protein quality. You should eat lean meat, aquatic products and legumes every day, and it is better if you can drink a glass of milk. If you are not used to eating dairy or fish, you can eat more soy products and mushrooms to make up for the lack of animal protein. In principle, it is not advisable to consume too much fat and cholesterol after cholecystectomy, but it is not necessary to restrict fat excessively, because a certain amount of fat in the intestine is necessary to stimulate bile secretion and expand the volume of the common bile duct and keep the bile duct smooth. In addition, eating more high-fiber and vitamin-rich foods is also very beneficial to the patient’s recovery after surgery. Increase the number of meals as appropriate. It should be noted that each meal should not be eaten more than once, especially within 3 to 6 months after surgery, 4 meals per day is better. Eating less and more meals can reduce the burden of the digestive system, which is conducive to the recovery of health after surgery. It is better to eat some dishes containing vinegar every day because vinegar will enhance the digestive ability of the stomach and also regulate the acidity and alkalinity in the intestine to facilitate the function of bile and promote the digestion of fatty foods. Drinking tea regularly and eating more fresh fruits and vegetables also help digestion and absorption of food.
