Psychological crisis intervention

One day in July 2007, I received a call from Xiao Li: “Hello, Dr. Zhang! I’ve been accepted to so-and-so famous university…”. I could clearly feel her excitement and thrill on this end of the phone, while last year at this time she was wandering in the trough of her life and even wanted to leave this colorful world. Wuxi Mental Health Center Psychiatric Zhang Yuqi Xiao Li failed the 2006 college entrance exam, she should have entered the undergraduate score line, but she did not even reach the college score line, this reality is difficult for her to accept. She felt sorry for her parents who used their hard-earned money to pay for her education, and sorry for her teachers who had great hopes for her, and she spent all day in a small room, dazed, not thinking about her meals, and occasionally flashed the idea of leaving this world. At this time, Xiao Li had a psychological crisis, and her series of emotional reactions were more common in psychological crisis states. Her parents realized her unusual behavior in time and brought her to my office. After three weeks of psychological crisis intervention, Xiao Li successfully passed the extraordinary psychological period and rekindled her vision and hope for a better future. After studying hard, she got excellent results in the 2007 college entrance examination and was admitted to a famous university.    With the development of society and fierce competition, people are facing increasing stress, and if they cannot face the stress correctly, they will lose their psychological balance, which will lead to psychological crisis. So what are psychological crises? Psychological crisis can be basically divided into two categories: developmental and accidental. Developmental psychological crises are predictable, such as major problems encountered at different stages of development in the life cycle, characterized by dramatic changes in emotions, resulting in personal psychological imbalance, such as Xiao Li’s failure in the college entrance examination last year belongs to this kind; unexpected psychological crises are sudden and unpredictable, such as intimidation, natural disasters, major physical diseases, etc. There are two elements that constitute a psychological crisis: first, significant psychological stress. It causes acute emotional reactions such as anxiety, fear, depression; cognitive changes such as difficulty in concentration, memory loss; somatic discomfort such as insomnia, dizziness, headache; behavioral changes such as hostility, counterattack, unhindered, self-pity. Second, the person is unable to cope with the usual problem-solving methods and is unable to adapt to the stress.    Psychological crisis occurs, if not technically effective help and support, by mobilizing their own potential to re-establish and restore their pre-level psychological balance, it can lead to mental breakdown, resulting in adverse consequences of suicide or aggression against others. Therefore psychological crisis should be recognized and dealt with in a timely manner. On the one hand, we have to rely on the help of social support system, such as finding friends and relatives to confide in and seek their understanding; on the other hand, we can turn to psychological counselors, through psychological guidance, as well as the necessary medication, so that the person in crisis can get through the psychological extraordinary period as soon as possible and return to normal life. For severe psychological crises that cannot be solved by the above methods, physiotherapy can be used, such as multi-parameter monitored convulsion-free electroconvulsive therapy (MECT), which is a method of physiotherapy commonly used in psychology clinics. Its principle is to stimulate the cerebral cortex with an appropriate amount of pulsed current to cause extensive cortical discharges and induce a series of physiological changes in brain cells for therapeutic purposes. This method is known as a life-saving therapy, which has an immediate effect on suicidal behavior and is a very safe and effective treatment method. We have used MECT to successfully save more than 100 cases of people in severe psychological crisis with suicidal behaviors, so that they can rekindle their hope for a better future and go back to their normal studies and work.
