Why does metabolic acidosis occur in renal failure

Metabolic acidosis is a very common complication in patients with chronic renal failure. Patients with chronic renal failure develop metabolic acidosis because when the glomerular filtration rate of patients decreases to a certain critical value, although each kidney unit secretes more ammonia, the total ammonia excretion is still reduced, causing a decrease in the secretion of hydrogen ions, and the excess hydrogen ions in the body neutralize the bicarbonate, causing a decrease in the extracellular fluid bicarbonate This leads to a decrease in the concentration of bicarbonate in the extracellular fluid, resulting in acidosis. In case of metabolic acidosis, if the acidosis is mild, oral baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate tablets, can be used to correct the acidosis. If the acidosis is more severe, intravenous sodium bicarbonate can be used to correct the acidosis. Of course, if it is particularly severe, hemodialysis treatment can be used to correct the acidosis.
