The main way of working in psychological counseling/therapy is “talking”. Can “talking” heal? Many people are skeptical. This is perhaps one of the main reasons why some people turn away from counseling/therapy. In order to clarify this issue, we should start with human nature. What is a human being is an old topic. There have been theoretical debates about it, and there have been struggles in reality. In fact, Marx has long elaborated on this issue, he believes that man is the sum of social relations. We all know that the core of social relations is the relations of production, and the purpose of the relations of production is to obtain the means of production. Man needs the means of production, because without them, man cannot survive. On this level, like other animals, man is a creature. But man is after all a superior animal, knows that “unity is strength”, so they associate with each other, support each other, interact with each other – this forms the interpersonal relationship, in order to better obtain more abundant means of production. This mutual connection, support, role in the animals, called the group; and in humans, called social, to distinguish from the animals to meet the human “vanity”. In fact, the essence of both is the same. It can be seen that, in addition to biological properties, people also have social properties. People will have different feelings and experiences in the process of interaction, which forms the rich spiritual world of man – that is, man also has spiritual properties. To sum up, what is a human being? Man is a creature, man is a society, and man is a spirit. Engels said: “Labor created man, and in his labor man formed language. Language is a tool for human interaction. With language, people’s interaction is more precise; with language, the social attributes of people are more real; with language, the spiritual attributes of people (feelings) are more fully expressed. It can be seen that language is a concrete expression of the social and spiritual attributes of people. In life, there are often people who say, “I am a bad mouth, always hurt others. This shows that through language can affect the social and spiritual attributes of people. Of course, this is an example of the negative effect on people through language. In life, we also often see that a certain person who has difficulties in life or work is relieved by the help and support of enthusiastic people or organizations. This is an example of a positive effect on people through language. In short, language can have a positive or negative effect on a person. Counseling/therapy is the use of language to influence and change a person, mostly in the form of “talking” according to the theory of psychology. In addition, people have potential, and language is needed to realize and manifest that potential. In general, human potential is not fully expressed and obvious. Potential is usually expressed in emergency situations, when people overcome difficulties. If it is fully expressed and the difficulties can be successfully overcome and the current problem solved, the person is happy, confident and healthy. If it is not fully expressed, if it cannot overcome difficulties and solve the problem at hand, the person will be confused, have low self-esteem and be prone to mental illness. Many studies have confirmed that human potential can be fully explored and manifested in emergency situations under the motivation of “words”. In this sense, counseling/therapy is the process of unlocking human potential. Therefore, in life, counseling/therapy can help people to guide their way, solve their problems, recover their self-confidence, regulate their thinking, and release their knots, so that they can live a healthy and fulfilling life! In clinical practice, psychological counseling/therapy can not only help people suffering from mental illnesses to relieve their pain and return to society, but also help people suffering from physical illnesses to recover their health as soon as possible. Modern medical research confirms that at least 80% of various physical diseases are related to psychological and social factors, which we call psychosomatic diseases. For example, cardiovascular diseases often start after emotional fluctuations; ulcer disease often occurs after a longer period of stressful work; cancer is often related to the occurrence of pre-morbid personality and life events, etc. The occurrence of many physical diseases are related to psychological and social factors, which has been increasingly accepted by the majority of medical workers and patients, in the clinical psychotherapy has become the fourth major clinical treatment means after drugs, surgery, physical therapy. So, can “talking” also treat somatic diseases? The answer is also yes. The idea of unification of mind and body was proposed by Chinese medicine thousands of years ago, and has been confirmed by modern medicine. For example, the relationship between the mind and the body has long been revealed by the phrases “angry hair” and “great anger hurts the liver”. Modern medical research, that psychosocial factors on the human body, through the body’s neurological, endocrine, immune system caused a series of physiological and biochemical changes in the body. If this change is too persistent and strong, and exceeds the body’s ability to regulate itself, it can lead to changes in tissues, organs and systems and physical diseases. In other words, psychosocial factors can lead to the occurrence of physical diseases through neurological, endocrine, immune and other mediating mechanisms. Then, language can be used to prevent and treat diseases by changing the “mediating mechanisms” through the adjustment of psychological and social factors. For example, patients with hypertension can improve their self-regulation and emotional stability through psychological counseling/therapy to prevent the occurrence of cerebrovascular diseases. In conclusion, the impact of language on people is enormous. It can not only directly affect the social and spiritual attributes of people, but also indirectly affect the biological attributes of people. Therefore, “talking” can cure diseases. Talking” (counseling/therapy) can not only help people to relieve their worries and treat psychological diseases, but also help to recover from many physical diseases. The correct understanding of counseling/therapy is one of the important signs of modern people. With the progress and development of society, seeking help from psychologists will become the new fashion of modern people!
