The cause of “leukoplakia vulvae”, also known as white lesions of the vulva, is unknown. It may be related to genes, autoimmunity, lack of sex hormones or decrease of sex hormone receptors, moist vulva, and itching and repeated scratching due to long-term stimulation of secretions. Clinically, the main manifestation is itching of the vulva, with itching lasting from months to years from onset to treatment, or up to 20 years. There is no seasonality or regularity in the severity of itching. Patients with vulvar squamous epithelial hyperplasia feel the itching more severely. In the presence of trichomonas or mycotic vaginitis, the discharge is more frequent. The local burning and tingling sensation is associated with itching-induced skin mucosal breakage or infection. There is varying degrees of localized hypopigmentation of the skin mucosa, often with edema, chancroid and scattered superficial ulcers.
