Metatarsal fasciitis is an inflammation of the beginning of the longitudinal ligament, the main ligament that forms the longitudinal arch of the foot. Patients with flat feet, high arches, clubfoot, and short Achilles tendons are susceptible to this condition. Obesity, wearing ill-fitting shoes and prolonged standing can aggravate the condition. Symptoms Heel pain Clinical manifestations Pressure pain at the beginning of the heel of the plantar fascia, poor flexibility of the Achilles tendon, may be accompanied by abnormalities of the ankle joint force line and arch structure. Radiography Exclude fatigue fractures and large heel spurs. Treatment To reduce inflammation of the longitudinal arch and improve the mechanical properties of the heel and ankle joint. Start with arch padding, correction of pronation and reduction of weight bearing. Acute pain can be treated with ice, massage and padding, while chronic pain can be treated with heat, massage and Achilles tendon stretching (most important), and a combination of cushions, arch supports and well-supported shoes can reduce the recurrence rate. Patients with persistent or recurrent fasciitis, with heel spurs greater than 2 cm in length or who stand or work on hard surfaces for long periods of time may be considered for surgical treatment
