As the saying goes, “the heart has to be treated by the heart”. There is some truth in this saying, but it can also lead many sufferers into the misconception that it is best to treat through psychotherapy and not with medication. In fact, all kinds of psychological disorders have a material basis, that is, they are related to the disruption of the secretion of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, and usually require medication. Of course, psychotherapy is very important, and its importance is no less than that of medication. Unfortunately, psychotherapy in China started too late, and I personally believe that there are very, very few qualified psychotherapists in China, and the vast majority of counselors and psychotherapists are not qualified enough to provide effective psychotherapy to patients, and sometimes even have the opposite effect. Why am I so pessimistic about psychotherapy in China? Because, for formal psychological counseling or therapists abroad, at least 500 hours of self-experience is required, and some countries even require 1000 hours, and at least 1000 hours of receiving case supervision. How many psychologists in China have reached this standard? Moreover, long-term standardized supervision is very important and essential for every psychotherapist! How many psychotherapists in China are able to do this? It seems that the national training materials for counselors do not even introduce what self-experience is, and quite a few psychological institutions do not have a standardized supervision system at all, so do you dare to just go to see a psychologist? The threshold of entry for national counselors is extremely low, and it can be said that they open training courses to sell counselor’s certificates. Often people who are interested in counseling and actively study it are interested in it because they have psychological problems. Do you dare to meet with such psychologists who have no medical background, who do not even know the difference between severe and mild mental disorders, and who have never received any self-experience with a counselor’s license? I still have to say the old cliché: “The mountains are easy to change, but the endowment is hard to change. Even with psychotherapy, for a significant number of sufferers, it often takes 1-2 sessions per week, tens to hundreds of sessions in total, to make a person’s personality healthier and better able to cope with negative stressful events. Personal psychological adjustment is important! However, “rivers and mountains are easy to change, but endowments are hard to change”. Personal psychological adjustment is difficult to significantly change a person’s personality and requires persistent effort. How to psychological adjustment? Become thick-skinned, treat yourself well, learn to enjoy (many people do not enjoy, need to learn. Selfishness, do not live for others, change the small trouble disaster, self-blame, things are not the best or the worst, very concerned about the evaluation of others and other very bad thinking mode. However, it is easier said than done, so let’s work together actively. I have been engaged in psychotherapy, self-experience and case supervision, and I know the importance of psychotherapy. Unfortunately, in China, the majority of patients have difficulty finding the ideal psychotherapist, and they cannot afford the cost of long term psychotherapy. Therefore, medication is currently necessary in China, and the efficacy of medication is far more certain than the efficacy of psychotherapy with the vast majority of Chinese psychotherapists. Similarly, in developed Western countries, even with better psychotherapy, medication is still essential for most patients with more severe psychological disorders. Throughout the developed Western world, antidepressants and anxiety medications are at the top of the sales rankings for prescription drugs. So, is there no place for psychotherapy in China? It is still important to pay attention to psychotherapy. Because, drugs only help you slowly change your mind and emotions, to slowly reduce the dosage of drugs, shorten the time of drug use, reduce the recurrence of the disease, or through psychological adjustment, slowly change some of our way of looking at the problem. If, however, you have difficulty finding a suitable psychotherapist or long-term standardized psychotherapy, you can try to participate in a variety of colorful and healthy social interaction activities and try to develop a variety of colorful and healthy hobbies. For example: outing photography, reading and chatting, yoga and fitness, square dancing and gymnastics, drumming and sword dancing, playing ball games and swimming, raising flowers and plants, raising cats and dogs, embroidery and knitting, cooking and so on. When we suffer from insomnia, headache, dizziness, memory loss, lack of concentration, soreness and weakness, our first reaction must be to do everything possible to deal with these problems. In fact, the more we fight, the more serious the problem may become. We should slowly try to accept the problem, live with it openly, and turn our attention to our hobbies and social activities. Accept the problem, do not focus on the problem, do not confront the problem, the problem is likely to slowly alleviate.
